Maximize the Return on Your Data Investment: Planning and Documentation for Data Collection and Analysis

The presentation provides guidance on the importance of planning for data collection and analysis and documenting findings and decisions to facilitate reporting. Information also focuses on essential elements in planning and documenting data collection and analysis and how to maximize the efficiency and utility of state efforts to use data to make mid-course corrections to collection or analysis plans. Helpful handouts are included.

Building State Capacity About Key Measurement and Evaluation Issues

The workshop focused on three IDC SSIP white papers: Implications of Growth Modeling for SSIP; Performance Indicators As a Tool for Measuring Progress Toward a SIMR; and Considerations for Making Changes to SIMR Baseline and Targets. During the workshop, participants were able to talk to and learn from participants from other states and provide input for the development of IDC white papers that address growth modeling, measuring progress toward a SIMR, and changing baseline and targets. The three white papers are currently in draft form and undergoing revisions based on input from the field. Published papers will be posted to the IDC Resource Library and affiliated as companion resources to the handout posted for this session.

Collecting and Using Data on Improvement Strategies

Information focuses on ways to collect and use data on coherent improvement strategies and assess gaps in existing data for evaluation and provides examples of existing data or information states are already collecting (e.g., through monitoring) and how to use that data to measure SSIP activities. A helpful handout is included.

Implications of Growth Modeling for SSIP: Measuring Growth Within the SSIP Process

Growth models provide states with an option for determining how to measure progress toward a student level SIMR outcome. Participants discussed and provided input into development of an IDC white paper that focuses on different growth model approaches, the data requirements, and analytic approach in order to use a growth model approach to measure growth toward a SIMR student outcome. Currently, the white papers is in draft form and undergoing revisions based on input from the field. The published paper will be posted to the IDC Resource Library and affiliated as a related resource to the handouts already posted for this session.

Sharing Data With Locals: Data Quality and Data Use From the Ground Up

This topical burst suggests guidance and tips for creating data products for local staff and ways to promote a culture of high-quality data and data use at the local level.

The Data Are in the Details: Translating Evaluation Questions Into Detailed Analytical Questions

Information helps states recognize the need for wording evaluation questions differently for different purposes and audiences. The presentation provides steps for developing detailed questions for analysis. Clearly articulated analytical questions can help states determine what data are needed to answer the questions and more efficiently and effectively obtain the answers they need to use data to support success in the SSIP.
